چکیده

The Debye-Huckel equation is solved for the electrostatic interaction of point charges on the surface of a dielectric cylinder immersed in salt water. Numerical results are given for the potential as a function of axial separation for charges on the same side and on opposite sides of the cylinder, and for two values of the Debye screening length: infinity and unity, in units of the cylinder radius. Major deviations from the interaction in bulk solvent are found. The analytical results are also applied to the self-energy of a helical distribution of charge, and that part A\k of the self-energy which depends on salt concentration is isolated. The deviation of A‘k from its value for a uniformly charged cylinder is evaluated as a function of screening length. The deviation is small for DNA, and smaller for the CY helix. The deviation from a line of charge self-energy is much more significant, but all expressions for A\k agree if the salt concentration is low.

Charge Inversion and Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Flexible Polyelectrolytes

We have applied a continuum self-consistent field (SCF) theory to flexible polyelectrolytes on flat surfaces which are either uncharged or carrying the opposite charge as the polyelectrolytes. We examined in detail the effects of various parameters on the polyelectrolyte adsorption and surface charge compensation by the adsorbed polyelectrolytes. The ground-state dominance approximation (GSDA) ...

Fluctuations and interactions of semi-flexible polyelectrolytes in columnar assemblies.

We have developed a statistical theory for columnar aggregates of semi-flexible polyelectrolytes. The applicability of previous, simplified theories was limited to polyelectrolytes with unrealistically high effective charge and, hence, with strongly suppressed thermal undulations. To avoid this problem, we utilized more consistent approximations for short-range image-charge forces and steric co...

Aggregation of Charged Colloidal Particles

This chapter reviews the recent progress in aggregation of colloidal particles with long-range interactions, including simple colloids and polyelectrolytes. The relevant interactions between colloidal particles, including Born repulsion, van der Waals, electrostatic, structural solvation, hydrophobic hydrodynamic interactions and attraction between like-charge colloids, charge nonuniformity, an...

Charge regulation in biomolecular solution.

Proteins and other biomolecules contain acidic and basic titratable groups that give rise to intricate charge distributions and control electrostatic interactions. 'Charge regulation' concerns how the proton equilibria of these sites are perturbed when approached by alien molecular matter such as other proteins, surfaces and membranes, DNA, polyelectrolytes etc. Importantly, this perturbation g...
